Dixon Lake Beach Cleanup
Kids Saving Critters Conservation Foundation had a wonderful morning at Dixon Lake with six amazing volunteers who came together to help protect local wildlife and preserve one of North County’s beautiful natural areas. Together, our volunteers removed 10 pounds of trash, helping make Dixon Lake a cleaner and safer home for the animals that depend on it.
In addition to cleaning up litter, participants learned about the incredible wildlife and habitats that make Dixon Lake so special. Nestled in the hills of northern Escondido, Dixon Lake is connected to the 3,058-acre Daley Ranch and provides important habitat for a wide variety of species. Volunteers learned about waterbirds such as mallards, American coots, pied-billed grebes, and wintering ospreys, as well as chaparral birds including California towhees, California thrashers, Wrentits, and the rare Rufous-crowned sparrow. We also discussed the area’s mammal residents, including bobcats, coyotes, ringtails, and the occasional mountain lion, along with the many smaller animals that call the surrounding chaparral home.
One especially memorable moment came when we discovered a native turtle attempting to lay her eggs inside a concrete culvert. While we generally encourage people to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid interfering with natural behaviors, this was an unusual situation where the hatchlings would have had little chance of survival. Staying true to our mission of helping wildlife whenever possible, we carefully relocated the mother just outside the culvert to a nearby natural area, giving her the opportunity to nest in a much safer location.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to make a positive impact for wildlife. Every piece of litter removed helps protect animals and keeps our natural spaces healthy for future generations. We look forward to seeing you at our next conservation event!
