Protecting endangered Yucatán black howler monkeys and their habitats

Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary is unlike any other protected area in Belize as the sanctuary is made up of private lands voluntarily conserved by more than 170 landowners across seven Belize River Valley communities. Deeply rooted in the region’s Kriol culture and history, the sanctuary serves as a model for community-based conservation. Kids Saving Critters partnered with the sanctuary to help protect the endangered Yucatán black howler monkey by raising funds for community micro-loans that support participating landowners. These loans provide economic incentives for conservation while helping ensure that critical monkey habitat remains protected in perpetuity.
